THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.

UOUS AND ’QUAKES, An English lady complained (hat an earthquake wpke Fido. If the pet had been a normal dog, instead of a pet, he would have been well awake Jong before the earthquake, ancl probably have awakened his mistress. It is well known to those who have lived any length of time in earthquake areas that dogs, horses, and birds are peculiarly suspectible to the advance tremors, often an hour or more before the big ’quake arrives. The same has been noted by explorers among primitive races, as W. H. Hudson remarked in Patagonia. Civilisation destroys or inhibits the natural instincts and senses, so that we have earthquakes waking Fido, instead of Fido sitting up: and waiting for the earthquake". —(Sydney Paper.
