THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
‘‘TOURIST” TRAVEL, A sign of the times may be seen in thei fact that the- Orient Line h.a.s turned two of its steamers into “tourist class” ships. The name originated in the Atlantic trade. Before America* put an embargo on immigration, the trans-Atlantic ships did a great trade carrying hordes of third class passengers at so much a head. When the flow was stopped their third class was empty, but some ingenious person hit on the idea of re-arranging the cabins and accommodation, labelling it “tourist cabin class,” and attracting people of moderate means who liked to travel, but who would never be able to put up with the third class accommodation on a steamer carrying immigrants.
