CLUE OF A BROKEN BUTTON
DARING BURGLAR CAUGHT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 25. ' Noises heard at the back of the shop of Mr G. Blanchard at New Plymouth while Mr Blanchard and his wife were occupied in their sitting room pit June 6 at 9.80 p.m. proved to have been made by u daring burglar, Property valued at was‘missing from a bedroom, which was in a disorderly condition,
Two pieces of broken button were handed by Mr Blanchard to detectives who visited a camp near the shop and interviewed Patrick Joseph Hawkins. It was found that the pieces of broken button found on Mr Blanchard’s premises fitted another part still on the coat of one of .the occupants of a tent at the. Belt Road camp. Cedric Black said that Hawkins had camped with him. Upon .the night in question Hawkins had left*- the camp wearing Black’s , overcoat, /-which lie had borrowed. When the overcoat was returned to'.Him, Black discovered two handkerchiefs in .Lh® pockets marked “Beatrice Blanchard,” and Hawkins told Black that', he had found the handkerchiefs. ’. .Ay - .
Hawkins was arrested and charged with breaking and’ entering.;' He pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence. •'V ■ ■,•'
