A TIMARiU FIRE. (liij Telegraph-—Per Press Association) TIMARU, June 24. Shortly after ten o’cl belt last night a file broke out on the premises of Charles Begg and Co., at the corner of the Arcade and Stafford Street and caused serious damage. Before the a,larm was given the fire had already burst through the roof and when the Brigade arrived the fire had a strong hold, the Haines leaping high over the doomed building, / Once tlie Brigade arrived, however, the flames were quickly brought under control, but not before considerable damage bad been done.

'The blaze was a .spectacular one, and for a. time fears were entertained that the conflagration would spread to the adjoining buildings, but the Brigade bundled the situation excellently.

The building which is owned by Mr W. McKeown of Christchurch, was badly damaged by fire, whilst water caused considerable destruction in the

main shop. The tenant, Mrs Johnstone, was in bed when the fire broke out and had a narrow escape. She got out of a window and walked along a glass verandah, but in her progress was badly cut by broken glass and was attended to bv a- doctor.
