An interesting exhibit in tb n window of a jewellery firm at Dunedin for a. short period on Saturday morning was a. parcel 0. retorted gold from the Golden Progress Quartz Milling Company’s workings at Oturelnm, Central Otago. The weight of the gold is 3260 z., and represents four and a hall weeks’ crushing of 211 tons of stone. Rabbits have been less numerous during the past few years than formerly, but they are again beginning to multiply in certain localities, and measures for their extermination will be carried out this winter, states the annual report of the Selwyn Plantation Board. Hares are causing damage to young plantations and, on being pursued, they can clear the netting fences. There is something in the nature of a small gold rush taking place on the beaches of the Molyneaux River in the vicinity of George and Shingle Creeks. The river is said to be lower than it has been lor a long time, and with the (losing of the Ivawamu dam it is anticipated that a fair amount of payable ground will be exposed (says the “Otago Daily Times”). A fair- stretch of the river on both sides has been pegged off and claims are being acquired by experienced miners and also by unemployed men who have been working on road repair work. The prospectors arc very sanguine of making more than average wages out of their venture.
The session which will open on Thursday promises to lie eventful at an early stage. The interesting features associated with the party situation will be immediately overshadowed by the measures necessary to meet theunemployment emergency. The Address-! 11-Reply debate, usually the first j important business, often lasting for a fortnight, must give place on this occasion to financial legislation validating the Government s advances to the unemployed fund and enabling scheme No. 5 to be continued from June 20, the date when .unds nil out. Considerably more will need to lie done, because the Unemployment Act lias no financial provision adequate to meet the extraordinary increase in expenditure since its adoption. It was anticipated that the board’s funds from the levy of thirty shillings annually would produce £600,000, and as this carried a subsidy from the Consolidated revenue of an equal amount the annual resources of approximately £1,200,000 were expected to be ample, not only to provide for current needs, but to make some provision for handling the problem on more permanent lines. Unfortunately every moment of the board’s time and every" available penny of its resources have been required to cope with immediate needs, and when the’ Board reached the end of Its resource* last Saturday its weekly expenditure* was at tile rate of £2,080,0dd per annum.
