OBITUARY, Miss Nellie stewart, (Australian Press Association.) (Received this day at 8 a.m.) i SYDNEY, June 22. Obituary—Miss Nellie Stewart. For many yeegs she took Heading roles in comic opera and featured “Sweet Nell of Old Drury.” She died of pleurisy at Mosmam to day. NORTH TASMANIAN FLOODS. HOBART, June 21. Serious floods have followed continuous heavy rains in the northern parts of the State. All of the rivers are heavily swollen, and traffic is dislocated. A bridge at Fingal was washed away.' A man walked over the end of the bridge in darkness and was drowned.
FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED. SYDNEY, June 21. An unexpected development occurred over the death of Miss Elizabeth Traquair, aged forty-three years at Epping. It was at first thought she had committed suicide by suffocating herseh, but the Coroner has now ordered that the body he exhumed for a further examination. N.S.W. SAVINGS BANK. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 22. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Dunn, stated we are hopeful of the Government Savings Bank of New South Wales will soon reopen, as a result of negotiations the Premier is conducting with the Federal Government.
WAGES TAN. . SYDNEY, June 22, Sydney newspapers says the wages tax scheme drafted at the instance of Mr Lang, will be submitted to the Labour Caucus for approval. The scheme embraces the retention of a shilling in the pound on incomes c\er the basic wage, and a graduated tax on all earnings on the following basis;— £2OO to £250 a shilling in the pound; £250 to £3OO Is 3cfin the pound £3OO to £350 Is Gd in the pound. £350 to £4OO Is 9d in the pound. £4OO to £450 2s in tlie pound ; £450 to £SOO 2s 3d in the pound.
