REFUSE TO PLAY WITH THE TRIBUTORS. (By Telegraph— -Per Press Association) WESTPORT, June 20. The bitterness of the mining struggle which has taken many forms, including an entry into the social life .of the community, took a new turn to-day when it was responsible for two senior Rugby matches not being played. The Old Boys’ team lined out on the field at Westport for a match with the Rovers’ team, of Granity. The latter followed, but they stated that they wotdd not play unless a member of tile Old Boys’ team who works at the Cascade mine (which uses the tribute system), withdrew. The Old Boys” team stood by their tribute miner player. The Rovers withdrew from the field.
A somewhat similar happening occurred at Ngakawau, where the Ngakawau senior team declined to play unless a member of the United team, who is also a tribute miner at the Cascade mine, was dropped. The United team would not agree, and the match was not played.
