MORE FERTILISERS
GOVERNMENT’S ADVANCE. Farmers who are unable to purchase fertilisers this year will have the opportunity of borrowing .rom the Rural Intermediate Credits Board. The Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour, said at New Plymouth on Tuesday that £IOO,OOO would be made available for fertiliser advances.
In New Zealand, lie said, the sales of fertiliser last year for top-dressing alone were more than treble, the total sales in 1914. It was expected there would be a decline this year, but the" Government was doing all in its power to help farmers to maintain their pastures. A s security for advances it was prepared to accept stock and chattels, and it was Also ready to discount promissory notes given by farmers and endorsed to the satis.action of the Rural Credits Board. Mr Smith stated that the concessions on the railways for the transport of fertiliser had meant considerable losses in the past few years. A large part of the burden had been carried by the Department of Agriculture, which had made payments of £337,604 to the Railway Department since the concession was fir r ‘ granted in 1926.
