“COMMON CLAY.”
Can an unmarried mother hope for justice from our “best people'’? C’an a girl who had made, a mistake ever rehabilitate herself ? , These are some questions fearlessly answered in “Common Clay”, Victor Fleming’s remarkable production for Fox Movietone featuring Constance Bennett and Lew Ayres, which will - be screened at the Princess Theatre to-night. Closely following Cleves Kinkead’s noted Harvard prize play, the screen version is said to be even more grip-
ping and dramatic. Miss Bennett enacts the role that carried Jane Cowl )• to fame. The story centres around a ; pleasure-loving girl .who takes a job ) • * *in a speakeasy because of gaiety and * Ausic. When the establishment is raided, she 1 sees the dangers and abandons the bright lights for a position as maid, in a fashionable home. Here, she finds herself subject to the same unwelcome attentions, and eventually falls, in love with the young heir of the house, played by Lew Ayres, who betrays her. Her efforts to secure justice' for herself and her with an unexpected turn of events at the climax, form the basis for one of the most interesting screen offerings. A disi tinguished cast, including Tiflly Mart shall, Beryl Mercer, Hale Hamilton, ' Purnell B. Pratt, Matty Kemp, and other favour, ites, enact prominent roles. A good supporting, programme, will also be shdwn.
