CHARGE OF THEFT. « . (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 18. Formerly a cashier in the city rates office, Arthur .Wallace Richardson, middle-aged, was committed bv Alr Page, S.M., in the Police Court today, to tlie Supreme Court for trial, on a charge of theft, as servant oi T9G/1/2, the property of the City Council. It was alleged that this sum was received over the counter on April 23rd and had not been lodged to the credit of the district fund in the bank. Accused was allowed bail on a bond of 43100, with surety for a similar amount. It was stated in evidence, that the accused used the current day's takings to make up the previous day’s hanking total, which was made up to 3.30 p.m., the takings after that going to the next day’s total. When the fact that money was missing was .discovered, accused denied knowledge. At first, it was believed the money had been removed from the safe by some person who had obtained means of access. Accused said that it was possible to open the safe with a penknife. The safe was kept in the strongroom, which had a burglar alarm on it. The caretaker gave evidence that the alarm went on Anzac night, and once about Easter. They had never found who it wag caused it to start.
