NAUTILUS DISABLED
•ENGINES GIVE OUT. SUBMARINE TOSSING IN A STORM. L United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] •NEW YORK, June 14. Sir H. Wilkins’ submarine is disabled and is tossing in heavy seas at a point one thousand miles west of •France. It was so situated to-day with two United States battleships standing by so as to give her a tow when the seas moderate. Word was flashed to the Naval Communications Station of the Navy Department that the Arkansas and the (Wyoming were ready to assist the submarine.
The seaboard engine and port motor of the Nautilus are disabled, and her batteries are dead.
A brief, but reassuring message was received from the Nautilus as follows; “We are O.lv. so far. We will communicate later, if we can scare up a few more batteries.”
The message said that the difficulty with the batteries had resulted from a mishap on Saturday, when one of the cylinders of the starboard engine cracked at a, time when there was only a low charge in the butteries. WARSHIPS STANDING BY. WASHINGTON, June 14. The U.S.A. battleship Wyoming had a heavy line near the disabled Nautilus, but the storm-tossed submarine lacked the power 'to manoeuvre itself into a position to take it aboard. The Navy Department was advised on Sunday night that the submarine has only enough power in its batteries to send emergency messages. A message said that it was hoped, after daylight, that it would be possible to get a line on board the Nautilus. The conditions in the submarine have been unchanged, apparently, during the last few hours.
