CIGARETTE COUPON SYSTEM
STRONG OBJECTIONS, MERCHANTS SERIOUSLY AFFECT EP, WELLINGTON, June 11. Strong objection to the cigaiette coupon system were again raiseoj at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, it had )een suggested by the Associated Jhambers of Commerce that the local chamber might approach local members of Parliament, but it wafe decided .o take steps to find out immediately die policy of the Government. Mr M. M. Heinemann said that in view of the decision reached at the last meeting he was surprised that nothing had been done. He quoted a etter from one tobacco company stating that owing to the dropping of the oroposedl legislation it was'continuing ts coupon system indefinitely, and mlarging the range of prizes. The "Cnipanyss’ proposals were not only extremely detrimental to the watchmakers and jewellers, but also seriously affected leather goods traders iul others. Members of the Watchmakers’ and Jewellers’ Association had agreed that their sales of watches had Iwindled by 50 per cent, since the •onpon system had commenced. The ■natter was so serious that many of the small shopkeepers might be forced ant of business. They shouldi learn rnmediately tlie Government’s policy, md he moved that the matter be bn Ken up with the Prime Minister and tho Minister of Industries and Commerce without delay. The chairman (Mr J. P. Luke) sn'icl 'hat it had been suggested by the \ssociated Chanters of Commerce that '■lie matter might be taken up with the local members of Parliament.
Mir Heinemann said that they should first learn definitely whether the Government proposed to go on with the proposed legislation. II the Government’s reply was net satisfactory they oould then place the matter belore the local members of Parliament. A motion on these lines was moved bv Mr Hinemann and carried.
