EXCELSIORS V. BLAKETOWN
Played at Victoria Park on Saturday Excelsiors won by 17 jto / (j. From the commencement there was a period of even play. Blaketown were first to attack and their backs swinging into action time and again, but bad handling spoilt many excellent chances. Bouterey was giving his rearguard plenty of opportunities but they made, little use of them. In the first spell the Black forwards had Lb better of tne gani'e but,in the second .spoil, the visitors’ pack assumed the upper hand. For the winner, Schroder, 11. King, Kelly and Davidson scored tries, the last, named being convert ed by L. Hughes,* while he also kicked a penalty. Negri scored two good tries lor Blaketown. Davidson and •\V. Hughes were perhaps tho. best of tin; Excelsior rearguards, with Steven* son showing improved form at fullback. Kiiig arid Schroder; the wingers, made the most of limited opportunities, with the former the morb impressive. The forwards were a very even lot, with Hughes ulid Wl’ight always prominent. The Blaketown hacks were disappointing in that they did not make better use of their chances. Negri and Bouterey were the most noticeable of tlie homo team’s backs, and Blunt and McEnancy also shone at times. Scott, Diamond and Harper stood out from tho rest of the Blaketown pack. Shortly before the final whistle, L. Hughes was forced to retire with ail injury to his head. Air A, Jamieson controlled the game.
RIVALS P. UNITED. This game was played at Kumara and was won by Rivals by 3 points to nil.
The first spell was a very even one, after the first ten minutes, during which the Rivals repeatedly attacked and kept United near their line. Schist was prominent in the Rival vanguard, he being always a grafter, and not bad in the loose, United forwards, led by Rathbun and Bell, then livened up arid came away to neutral territory. The only items or note, however, before half time were when ’Walton, failed with two penalty kicks at goal from within a distance that ought to have meant points, and when l’fahlert ap pea red to score a try for Rivals under the posts, but had it disallowed.
In the second spell, the play again was a strenuous forward encounter, the United pack being led by Burley and Rathbun, but the redoubtable Rival pair, Houston and Pjtaldert, knocked the oposing side back every time, tfiosa Rival backs play i tut a fine, game. Rivals were also indebted to their full-back, Carter, for his excellent defensive work, he being sound in tackling, while he handled and kicked iu a most accurate manner. About a quarter of. an -hour before the end, Rivals were awarded a. free kick, and from about thirty-five yards out Pfah lert kicked a beautiful goal, giving his side the lead and a.s it proved, the victory, this being the only score of the match. Subseqeuntly a comedy element was introduced when at the opposite end from the play a Rival and a United forward were to he seen in an approved pugilistic attitude, having a little contest on their own, until the referee saw them then from the corner of his eye, and at once stopped the bout, ordering off both men, Charlie Pfahlert and Cliff Mofhtt, off the field. Air Dewe was referee.
STARS V. COBDEN. At Victoria Park Stars defeated Cobden by 11 to 8. For Stars W. Hughes scored three tries, one being converted by Fong, while for Cobden. Keith and N. Eggelton scored tries, one being converted by A. King.
