LATEST FIGURES £1,153,354,029. £177 PER HEAD. The public debt of Australia amounted to £1,153,354,029 at March 31 last. This figure compares with £1,100,597,198 at June 30, 1930, and is an increase of £52,756,831 for nine months of the financial year. The major portion of the increase has occurred during the third quarter. As Australia lias not recently been a long-term borrower, the addition to the public debt during this period is an indication of the increasing rapidity with which Government indebtedness on short term account has expanded. The debt per head of population rose from £l7O/17/6 at June 30. 1930, to £177/14/9 at March 31. The total interest pavahie on the public debt at- March 31 was £57.412.450, an increase of £2,047,001 since June 30. This total is equal to £B/17/per head. The amount- payable in Australia was £28.843.998, leaving £28,568,452 payable overseas.
