Water.—The water connect ion leading to A. Cederman’s in Jollfe Street was lowered under the road owing to the cutting leading down to Stafford 'Street. Three new pipes were put in the main at the corner of Fitzherbert and Stafford Streets, and a new pipe was put on the main in Weld Street and <4. Kawling's Weld Street, on the 29th a bad leak was repaired near -McKay’s creek on the Lake road and several small one’s attended to, several leaks about town were repaired. The average depth of water in the IResvrvoir was 3ft lOin. —Received. UNEMPLOYED RELIEF WORK. The east belt drain was carried from near Stafford Street, across Hampden street, a double row of 2ft 3in concrete pipes being put under the road, tinnorth drain was wdened between the belt and Spencer Street, and the spoil lev 11' d. Park Street drain between P.ollestori and Davie Street was excavated. The drains leading from Sale Street into the hill at the gravel pit was cleaned cut and the growth cut, from Hall Street up to Sale Street. Growth was cleared of Davie Street beweeti Hampden and Stafford Street and .in jollie Street between Hampden and Park Street, and the growth was cut in Hampden Street to Jollie Street, The footpaths in Weld Street was chipped ; in Hampden Street and part of Sale* Street footpaths was also chipP Tho foreman reported on the following work carried out during tbe month of May!-" The East Town Belt dram was enrried in to the hill nt the back of the Racecourse, the unemployed under Mr Wieblitz completing this part, the spoil from the drain being levelled out (except for a portion between Hampden Street and the hill). Since the 18th Mr Wieblitz has been employed at the yard making concrete pipes of which 100 has been made, the work is being done by returned soldiers. Mr J. Cuthush was employed with rebel workers in laying ashphalting at the railway crossing in Weld Street which was completed. A section of footpath along Cass Square was finished with screened gravel, while pot holes in Revell Street and the footpaths were repaired with asphalt. The corners of tSaffovd and Fitzherbert Street, Hampden and Revell Streets, and Hampden and Sewell Streets were prepared for tar sealing. A hole in Sewell Street caused by a defective down pipe was repaired. At the corner of Bealy and We.d Street a down pipe was renewed, and a culvert in Tuber Street between Sewell and Revell Street was replanked. A crossing was put in at Rev. Naylor s in Sewell Street, and a water connection renewed at the corner of Weld and Fitzherbert Streets, and a number of leaks repaired. The unemployed have been engaged in cleaning the footpaths and drains, also cutting growth. The following streets have either the drains attended to or the footpaths and growth cut: Livingston Street, Davie Street, Jollie Street, Sale Street, Wold Street, Hampden Street, Tudor Street and Park Street and Gibsons Quay; some drainage is also being carried out at tire Abattoirs. The horse and dray belofiging to the Racecourse is doing useful work, assisting on the streets and removing spoil, The depth of water in the .reservoir averaged 4ft.

REPORTS

From Manager of Abattoirs reporting there were slaughtered during April i— 2o cows, 11 heifers, 50 bullocks 220 sheep, 268 lambs, 28 pigs, 24 calves; condemned nil. Fees for period, £-77/10 j- (same period last year £6B 12/6). —Received. For the month of Alay there were slaughtered—26 cows, 17 heifers, 54 bullocks, 246 sheep, 148 lambs, 18 pigs, 35 calves.; condemned 1 cow. Fees’ for month £76/13/6 (same period last year £69/4/6). —Received.

From Manager of Abat'oirs: —Although 1 have not been able to obtain proof, I have reason to believe that stock slaughtered on private premises is being sold within the Borough,, and as this constitutes ,on offence under the Slaughtering- and Inspection Act, 1908, I would suggest that publicity be given to the matter. —Received. The Overseer reported the cost of a street crossing for Mr Shadbolt would be £2/11/6.—Received; work to be done on payment of cost of work,

The Town Clerk reported in connection with Reserve No. 446, that the necessary action had been taken Received. The Mayor moved that application be accordingly made to change the right of the- reserve. Seconded by Mr Duff and carried. > Mr Ileenan moved that 10 per cent, charged on receipts for football matches be charged off the net receipts. Seconded by Mr Heinz and carried. WORKS COMMITTEE. • To absorb some of the men employed under Unemployment Scheme No. 5, the Foreman was directed: — (1) To have the surplus grit and dust removed from the tar-sealed portion of Weld Street, and also the footpath in Weld Street, at the front of Newman’s Garage, to prevent tjie gretfrom blocking the pipe drain. (2) To tarseal those kerhed footpaths which do not require to be re-condit-ioned.

The Secretary, Westland Racing Club stated that the Council could use the horse and dray belonging to the Club for ec payment of one pound a week, the Council to feed and shoe the horse whilst in use, and as a lot of useful work could be done on this basis, your Committee have accepted the offer, subject to the Council’s confirmation. —Received.

THE ESTIMATES. The ‘Town Clerk submitted the Estimates fior the year. After considerable discussion, Sir Evans moved that the Estimates be approved, on the understanidng- that every possible retrenchment be observed. Seconded by Mr Heenan and carried. Tt was resolved that the vote be struck on the same line s as last year. The Council roes at 8.50 p.m.
