WEST COAST RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting wns held hist evening nt Grey mouth. Westland Referees’ Association wrote through the Sub-Union protesti.- t against the action-of the West Ctasi ling by Union in forwarding "the na”j..« of referees submitted by the local Referecs' Association, considered capable of controlling inter- provincial games The Sub-Union contended that tin names should have been forwarded direct to the New Zealand Union. The Chairman moved that the Westland lteferees’ Association be notified that the submission of the names of referees is a matter concerning the N.Z. Union and the West Coast Union, and that the selection of names was carried out by the He forces’ Appointment Board and approved by the Union. The motion was seconded by. Mr Guy and carried.
It was decided that the Westland Sub-Union he notified that their dole., gate on the AV.C.R.U. has not attended meetings for some considerable tin e and pointing out that it would he in the best interests of the Sub-Union if he did attend.
Tile Canterbury Rugby Union notified their inability to arrange a visit to the West Coast by a Canterbury representative team, but advised that the- local union make arrangements with a leading Christchurch Club team for a visit. The Merivale Club was suggested as a likely one.—Received.
The Marlborough Union that the match allotted them with tlm touring .Maori team on September 2nd would clash with the fixture. Combined Section Shield districts v. N.S. Wales at Nelson, and asked if the West Coast Union had any objection t-o their declining representation i'll the latter fixtures, ft was decided to notify the Marlborough Union that tlie local Union offers no objection.
Mr Williams referee of the Star v. Rivals match at Rugby Park last Saturday, stated that the ground was in very had condition, and was unfit to [day on. The hard frost on tiie previous night was the main cause of the deplorable condition, and he considered that had the Postponement Committee seen the ground on the Saturday, the match would not have been played. Mr Guy said the ground was bad enough, hut matches had been played at Victoria Park when the ground was twice as had.
Mr Williams did not think that the ground at the Park had ever been as had as that on Saturday.
The Chairman said he inspected the ground on the Saturday morning, and had communicated with the Secretary, telling him that the ground was not fit for play. The Secretary however, had said that the Hokitika team would he coming up and that it was too late to postpone the match. Tt was therefore decided to play the match, and the third grade match was postnoned in order that the ground might he in tln j best condition for the senior game. The heavy rain yu the Thursday, followed by the very hard frost, was the cause of tlie unplayable condition of the ground. The following fixtures were arranged for Saturday next. .Tune 1.3:
