A LABOUR DEFEAT

ELECTION IN VICTORIA. MINISTER LOSES HIS SEAT. (Ansiralian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, June 8. Contests for nine seats in the Victorian Legislative Council were held on .Saturday, the occasion being the triennial election. They resulted in the return of five retiring members and lour new candidates.

The outstanding feature of the election was the diminished Labour vote, and tile overwhelming defeat of Mr \Y. J. Beckett, the Labour Minister oi Health, by Mr Herbert Olney, a United Australia Party candidate.

The camapign was conducted almost entirely on the) issues of national finance.

Mr Beckett was the only Labour candidate to be defeated.
