WELLINGTON, June 9.

ATr H. H. Sterling is to retire, later, from the general managership of the Railway Service, and lie then will become Chairman of the Railway Board. Under normal circumstances Air Sterling would have been entitled to retire on a pension of £2041 per annum, and he will now receive a greatly reduced pe.:.sitm. calculated on an actual basis, and he will also receive one thousand pounds sterling per annum as Chairman’ of the Board, instead of his present salary of £3130 per annum.

TOURIST TRAFFIC. AVETINGTON, June 9. At the result of arrangements between the Railways and the Tourist Departments, economies are being effected through the amalgamation of duties at the central hooking offices at Auckland and Wellington. Hr Veitch announces that the whole of the work will he performed by the Tourist Department which will permit of the' work being carried out with one officer in charge at Auckland and "Wellington respectively, and will enable other savings, both in staff and othor smaller economics, to be made,

The Departments of Tourist and Health Resorts will also take over responsibility for and the control of tourist publicity work at present performed by the four mail agents of the Government on the Vancouver and ’Frisco mail boats. It is anticipated that the new arrangement will effect a saving of approximately £2OOO yearly and at the same time will enable more efficient service to he given than under the present divided control.
