What appeal' to have been deliberate attempts lo wreck two trains on two separate nights happened six miks south uf To Awnmutu during the weekend.
On the fust occasion, a sle per wa placed across the line and the ong;ii
of the 7.0 f) p.m. Te Kuili-Kraidtton .Junction mixed train hit 11 1<> ohsirmtion. The incident w;is reported and inquiries were marie, but not much notice was taken of the occurrence.
When a similar happening occurred on Saturday evening to the same train however, matters assumed a mndi ■more serious aspect. This time, a cod of copper wire weighing one hundredweight was placed on the line at practically tile .same spot. The en.glne crew did not notice ii, and suddenly a heavy jolt shook the train. It was found, on investigation, that a coi! of wir<» was entangled in the under-gear of tile engine, as well a* round the wheels, axle and brake li'ncks of the waggon immediately behind it. If took l.he train crew nearly an liouv to disentangle the obstruction before the train could be moved forward.
