WATERFRONT WORK

preference issue

(Australian Press Association.)

CANBERRA, June 8.

Regarding the matter of preference work on the waterfront to the members of the Waterside, Workers’ Federation, although it has not jet been officially announced it is understood that the Federal Senate’s petition on the interest to the Governor-General, has been rejected by the GovernorGeneral.

The Senate decided, on the motion of Sir Geo. Pearce (Leader of the Opposition), to present a petition to the Governor-General, requesting him to refuse approval during the present session of any regulation being in substance the same as the regulation already disallowed by the Senate. This action by the Senate was, in consequence of the continual gazetting of new regulations by the Government for the giving of preference in employment on the waterfront to the members of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, after the Senate, had disallowed the regulations each time they were made by the Government. The reply of. the Governor-General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, to the Senate’s petition is contained in a is e a fed packet which was handed to the Federal AttorneyGeneral, Hon. Mr Brennan, to-day. with the stipulation that it is not to be opened until the Senate , has met on Wednesday.
