CRICKET

NEW ZEALAND TOUR. AGAINST SOMERSET. (Special to Press Association). (Received this day at 9.25 a.m) RATH, June 8. New Zealand cricketers continued the match against Somerset in line weather. ■ The wicket was somewhat difficult owing to rain overnight.. Talbot attacked the bpwljfig vigorously and added fifty-one to his overnight score in fifty minutes, hitting three sixes and four fours. It was a fine display of clean hitting. The innings was invaluable to the side. Vivian went out l.b.w. second ball, hut Blunt hatted very steadily, it having become apparent that the New Zealanders would have to fight hard for a first innings lead. Blunt put on iiftv-four more slowly than usual. Page was run out in a curious fashion. He snicked a ball and overbalanced and before he regained his crease the wicket keeper whipped off the bails. The later batsmen lacked enterprise and when the ninth wicket fell, eleven runs were still needed for a lead.

Weir patiently watched White at one end, allowing, James finally to place New Zealand ahead.

White bowled fifty overs for eighteen maidens.

Somerset batted for 110 minutes, and at one stage it seemed that the whole eide might- -be out before stumps wore drawn. Weir howled remarkably well keeping a flawless length and swinging away. He had at one time taken 3 wickets for 5 runs in twelve overs. A timely stand by Earle and Case added fifty-ssix for the sixth wicket. Case was bowled by 'Page in the last over. Weir sent down twenty-two overs including eight maidens, without a change. SOMERSET—First Innings. The general opinion of the selection of the English test team against New Zealand is that mainly it. has .an eye to the finding of young blood to recapture the Ashes from Australia. It is understood the following have been chosen against New . Zealand : Jardine (captain), Peebles, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Larwood, Ames, Verity, Bakewell, and probably the Cambridge captain, Kemp-Welsh. Everyone accepts Veritv as the successor to the wily Rhodes while the dashing young Bake well is regarded as a successor to Hobbs as a partner for Sutcliffe.
