Some interesting particulars were supplied yesterday of the magnitude of the works going forward in extending the electric power scheme at Kanieri Forks. The undertaking is one of great inteiest to the district, present and prospective for ; it means-the Organisation of a serviceable power adaptable to all manner of industrial undertakings as circumstances demand. At present gold dredging is the principal object in view, - and very thorough are the preparations for the continuance of successful dredging at Rimu plat. The Company has now a reputation for thoroughness, and both in respect to the development of hydroelectric power and also in regard to the mining operations, the whole works are planned for stability and utility, The harnessing of the Kanieri river is an interesting, phase of the present operations, and shows possibilities in other directions an power is required. It is pleasing to Know that mining is taking on renewed life in other directions. The new dredge at Throe Mile (Qkarito) is about to set Out on its career which is one of promise following the attractive re suits derived in tbe preliminary prospecting and the opening out*" works Again at Awatuna, the dredging of the Auckland lead is in hand again, and under the re-organised scheme shows great promise. Prospecting is in hand on the Arehura flat, in the neighbourhood of One Mile road line where there are probabilities of picking up the Blue Spur leads, including the rich cement leads for which the locality was well known. In addition there is a, good deal of gold seeking going forword, and gold dredging which was quiet for a considerable time, is now more in evidence. The returns from gold mining are welcome addition to the country’s wealth, rnj yield an increased value, due to the benefit of’ the exchange rates, which are to the advantage of the gold miner if other enterprises find it a. penalty. The mineral possibilities of Westland are beyond question. The geological reports have always been encouraging, but the prospecting spirit was damaged under the -stress of inoreased costs, and more attractive labour conditions in other pursuits. With the decline in costs, the contraction of employment- in other industries, and the increased price obtainable for gold production, tire- industry is receiving a fillip. The improved returns from the enterprises afoot will encourage and is encouraging other ventures, and mining is coming hack as an industry of special value. The great enterprise is our own neighbourhood is certainly an example of thorough going organisation, and promises to command the success so well deserved.
