“STRICTLY UNCONVENTIONAL”

Humor on the screen is so often confined to the slapstick, that the appearance 6f a mature, intelligent and yet thoroughly funny drawing-room comedy is something to write home about. Such a work is “Strictly Unconventional,” which Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer adapted from W. Somerset Maugham’s play, “The Circle,” and is now presenting at the Princess Theatre. Whether the brilliance of this satire on marriage is due to the excellent performances of its all-star cast which boasts of such well-known screen and theatrical names as Lewis Stone, Ernest Torrence, Catherine Dale Owen, AM* son Skipworth, Mary Forbes, Tyrell Davis and Paul Cavanagh, or whether to its riotous situations and clever dia logue, is hard to tell since the who! t thing has been so shrewdly bound together in the capable direction of Dav id Burton. To be sure, both director and cast had splendid material to work with in the first place, but “Strictly Unconventional,” although it follows the general outlines of Maughants stage hit, turns out to be an improvement over the original in that the camera has been used to illustrate situations which the limitations of the (tage made possible. Also Pa the Magazine, Metrotone News, Comedy and 2olortone Revue.
