CRICKET
NEW ZEALAND TOUR. AGAINST SOMERSET. (Special to Press Association). LONDON", June 6. The New Zealand cricketers to-day commenced their match against Somerset at Path. Lowry lost the toss, and Somerset decided to hat. It was an easy wicket. The weather was fine. The attendance was four thousand.
The New Zealand team omitted -Merritt, Crornb and Alatiiexon. The two latter bowlers are receiving treatment for slight muscle strains. New Zea land were handicapped by the absence of their three leading bowlers, but Lowry handled the attack with excellent judgment. Somerset were dismissed for 244. There was a bright partnership between Lee and Ingle, which added eighty-seven for the third wicket. Ingle played particularly attractive cricket, hut the remaining batsmen offered little opposition. Leo became over-cautions when he was approaching the century, and he was caught at third slip. Weir howled with admirable steadiness throughout, sending down seventeen overs, ten of which were maidens. Blunt also kept a good length, and he tempted the batsmen to make mistakes. Fie. sent down twenty-six overs, seven of them being maidens.
New Zealand batted for eighty-five minutes before stumps wore drawn.

Mills was caught at lon'g off when no was attempting to hit White. Talbot and Blunt then played out time. The New Zealand fielding showed some improvement over that in the last two matches. Gloucestershire won by 47 runs Freak declarations, consequent on the new County scoring rules, reached the limit at Sheffield this morning in the G loucestershire-Yorkshire match, which had been held up for two days owing to rain. Gloucestershire, in endeavouring to force the conclusion oi the game, declared after the first bah had been allowed to go 4 byes.
