ASSAULT AT NIGHT SHELTER
LABOURER SENT TO GAOL. AUCKLAND, May 28. Arrested at the City Mission Night Shelter, oil a charge of assaulting the manager, Albert Wilson, a labourer named William James Carr, aged 27 years, appeared at the Police Court. Represented by Mr W. Noble', he pleaded not guilty, Mr Wi'-on said accused was refused admission to the shelter because m? was intoxicated. Witness ejected him in the presence of a contsable, but later Can- returned and became abusive, striking witness twice on the lace. Two of the inmates of the shelter came to witness’s assistance. Accused had been refused admittance before. Corroborative evidence was given by George Arthur Hewitt, who said accused also tried to strike him. “I had to hit Carr to keep him quiet,” he added. Constable .Marley said when he returned to the shelter he found Carr with his coat off in the middle of a crowd of men. Mr Noble remarked that evidently fairly drastic methods were used by those at the Night Shelter. ‘‘They need to when they are dealing with tin’s kind of man.” said Mr Hunt. Detective-Sergeant Kelly, in producing Carr’s list, added that Carr was a vagabond both in the North and South Islands. Recalled, the manager of the Ligm, Shelter said he had known Carr for some time. “He is a man. who is lazy and won’t help himself,” he said. ”jn my opinion he’ s not worth feeding.” Remarking that Coir had a bad list of previous convictions, the Magistrate consigned him to prison for one month.
