SYDNEY, Jm.e L Recently detectives arrested a prominent Sydney city solicitor, William Carnegie Clegg, aged 30 years. *nd his clerk, Airs LJcla Beryl Smith, aged 37, on charges of misappropriation of clients’ monies, since • when ninny additional <‘,barges have boon preferred against the pair, To-day whien. the preliminary proceedings began at the City Poli e Court, the number ol charges totalled sixteen. The police read a list ot the clients who claimed that they had been defrauded of sums ranging from two hundred to eleven hundred pounds. The woman Smith is also charged with aiding and a lotting Clegg in each instance.. Detectives told the -Court that many thousands ol pounds were involved in the accusations. They also guv denee that a number of tip clients mortgages did not exist, while several of the mortgages had been discharged, and the money paid into Clegg’s office, but it had .never been accounted tor. Various subterfuges were employed when the clients sought their money. Mrs Smith who carries out most ol the conveyancing, told the detectives that everything was legitimate so far ns she wns aware. T'C hearing of the case was adjourned.
