LECKIE LOSES. A POOR CONTEST. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 1. A boxing contest between Johnny Leckie, 9.3, and Joey Thomas (U.S.A.) 9.2 drew a crowd of well over 3000 people to-night, to the Town Hall, wlnicli was packed to the doors, and a large number were unable to gain admittance. Th e fight was one of 11 mci.sL disappointing nature, hardly o,u.e effective blow Pe.iiig- delivered by either men. Tlie local fans were much surprised to see Leckie who had never before been beaten in a light in Dunedin, and who favours the open style ot lioxing, clinching whenever tlie opportunity affords. His timing was bad and his famous left lead and crushing right were absent. Thomas is not a forceful type ot fighter, but he was the quicker to the punch, and was also quicker on ins feet. At tlie tenth round, Referee Kilinartin announced that Leckie could 11 ot continue, a.s he had cramp in the stomach. At this stage Thomas was hauling on points by a fair margin. The referee’s announcement was followed by a demonstration#. Leckie being subjected to hooting.
