5500 MEN ABSORBED

OX DOMINION FARMS. AND DEVELOPMENTAL WORK. I’ine achievements are credited to sections A and B of the Unemployment Board’s No. 4 Scheme, 4,898 unemployed men having been provided with work on farms since the Scheme began operations on 23rd. February. The Unemployment Board pays a subsidy of 15s per week for single men and 25s per week for married men engaged by farmers for work on their farms, the actual wage being mutually arranged between the worker and tinfarmer. The latter also provides board and lodging.

A subsidy of 33a% of the labour cost is offered by the Board for contract work on farms, under Section B, the farmer making direct arrangements with the men who are to do the work. Up to Saturday last, the records of both sections show the following re cults.— I Scheme 4A :—3,327 single men, 1,068 married men, 4,395 total, Scheme 4B : ed, 503 men employed. In addition to file above, the Native Trust Department has approximately 400 men employed on developmental work on Mritu Weka and Aohanga Stations. The former is in Hawkes Bay and the latter in Wellington Pro wince.. The men were all registered as unemployed and the Unemployment Board U contributing to the cost of the work. Similarly, the. Board is assisting in the emplovinent by the Lands Department of 50 men who are engaged jn developmental work in various parts of the Dominion.
