S.I. TRUNK RAILWAY
THE TERMINIUS. (13y Telegraph —Per Press Association) WESTPORT, May 26. Although no finality has been reached, the Public Work s Department has., for some time, had under consideration! the recasting of the South Island Main Trunk Railway scheme, with a view to making its northern termini “is at Clifford Bay, near Cape Campbell, instead of at Picton, as was originally suggested. The proposition has been investigated closely within recent months, the object of the re-arrangement being to cut down the travelling time between Christchurch and Wellington by several hours. Should the Government decide to recast its proposals, it is certain that, port facilities will have to be established at Clifford Bay, which is not at present capable of handling traffic. For this reason, sounding* of the bay have been taken recently, with the object off seeing whether it would be suitable as: a port. So far nothing official has' been stated concerning the prospects.
