Following representations, by Westport School Committee and an examination of the brick s: bools at Westport for earthquake damage, the Department has tome to the conclusion that the brick buildings are no longer safe for the housing of school children and has decided that they shall be demolished and that new buildings in timber, shall take their place.

On Sunday, while playing with a gun which he did not know was loaded, Chris Renwick. of Tiroroa, a lad 14 years of age. shot his younger brother, Raymond, in the foot. The bullet lodged and remained, in the bone. The injured lad was hastily brought into the Westport District Hospital. Accidents of this kind emphnsie s the necessity of great care being exercised by owners of guns in seeing that, after use, they are not left loaded.

At the Mag'strato’s Court, Greymouth yesterday, charged with assaulting Bahay Saratv, proprietress of the Cafe do Luxe, Boundary Street, on the night of May 10, and with using indecent language in a public place, 'Patrick Lnughlin Phelan pleaded not guilty, and was defended, by Mr J, Hannan. After hearing evidence the S.M. stated that the definition of the term "public place" had been considerably extended, but there wn s no mention of a shop or office, He upheld Mr Hannan's contention, that a restaurant could not be included, Apart from that, he was not quite satisfied that the language was Used by Phelan. There was only the evidence of Miss Saratv against him. In regard to the assault, it was quite clear that one had been committed, although pot of a serious nature, and there was sufficient evidence to convic-t Phelan of taking part in it. He would bo fined £l, with witnesses’ expenses £2 , Ills. The indecent language charge was dismissed.

An accident happened to a shooting party from Greymouth, which visited the Ikamntua district on Sunday, one of its members being mistaken for a deer, and severely wounded. The party comprised Messrs F. Boustridge, 11. Boustridge, and J. Hay ton, and had reached a place about live miles up the Rough River when the accident occurred, about 11 a,rn. The grey coat worn by Mr F. Boustridge was mistaken for a deer, and n shot wn s fired, the. bullet striking him in the buttocks inflicting a severe flesh wound. Mr 11. Boustridge proceeded to Ikamatua, but no telephone service wa9 available there, and it was necessary to go to Reefton by car, for Dr. Wicltcn. Meanwhile, a relief party set- out from Ikamatua and carried in the in* jurod man, the trip being difficult owing to the rough country. Mr Boustridge was conveyed to the Grey River Hospital, where an operation was performed. The injured man is 33 years of age, and a member of the firm of Boustridge and Hall, cordial manufacturers.
