Two Hororata sportsman were greatly surprised while driving home on Tuesday atternoon to see a chamois half a mile from the switching-station at Point Windwhistle. They got into touch with another stalker and set off up the hill in pursuit. After a good stalk, they shot the chamois, Hid found the specimen to be an excellent one. The resignation of Mir G. Penlington, who, for thirty-two years, lias held the position of architect to the Canterbury Education Board, was accepted at a meeting of the board on Friday. Complimentary references were made by members of the. board to Mr Penlington’s work with the board, and he was granted three months’ leave on full pay. The chairman (Mr W. A. Banks) referred to the change in school architecture from the ornamental to the open-air type, which had taken place while Mr Penlington was with the board.

The manager of a Mnsterton Bank was called to the telephone at his residence one night last wrHc to be told that the strongroom of his name was being broken open, states the “Bominion.” Passers-by, an agitated voice at the other end of the wire in* former him, had heard muffled explosions and flashes of light from within the building. The manager lost no time in driving to the hank, and cm opening the door his fears that all was not well were heightened by a white haze in the air. Enquiries made from a resident clerk, however, brought forth an explanation that the clerk and several companions had merely beven having a few flashlight photographs of themselves taken,

The firebolls rang out a vigorous alarm on Saturday night just before 8 o'clock. The scene of the outbreak was a two storeyed shed at the rear of Messrs Davidson Bros, foundry in Bealey Street. The flames had a good hold when the alahm wa R given, hut there was a prompt attendance of the Brigade and the outbreak was soon gotunder control and extinguished. Following investigation it was found that before closing down for the day before noon, a workman had carried a piece of hot ironwork from the forge, and had put it down on what was thought to ho earth on the bottom floor. There was a piece of dozed flooring there however which appatently fired and smouldered, and ultimately burst into flames, running up the wall lining hoards to the next floor whore the flames spread out, the bottom floor being practically undamaged. The building was used for storage purposes and the upper floor contained many patterns used in the business. The damage is estimated at about £6O, and thebe was no insurance .
