A lad at Gonville picked up a tin while playing, and hearing a rattle inside, decided to investigate (reports the Wanganui “Herald). He used the edge of an axe, and immediately there was a loud explosion. The boy was not serjouslv hurt, but was painfully burned about the face. The tin contained a number of railway detonators, only one of which exploded. Had the hoy used the back of the axe lie would have exploded then. all.

While Seated in front of thle- fire at his father’s office on Saturday morning, Jeffrey, son of Mr and Airs M. J. Fogarty, of Greymouth was apparently overcome by the carbon-mon-oxide fumes from the glowing fire, for he fell forward, his head coming into contact with the flames. He was quick to recover, but not before his hair had been burned, and painful burns to bis forehead had been received. The lad is receiving treatment at bis borne, and is making satisfactory progress.

Counterfeit half crowns and florin s have begun to circulate in Christchurch, and two banks have already discovered bad coins. The general opinion seems to he that they are not being made in Christchurch, as the number circulating is apparently small and it is possible that they have drifted in from some other centre where they are being manufactured. V bile there has been some newspaper suggestion that the combined race meeting at Grcymouth on June 3rd, and (Ith., was in doubt owing to an objection lodged by the Dunedin Jockey Club, it is satisfactory to know that the totalisator permits for the two days have been issued, and that the meeting will take place at the appointed time. The outstanding success of Miss Rife Morgan at the Christchurch Competitions is giving her friends much gratification, and the young lady is the recipient of many congratulatory messages from here. Next week Mfss Morgan competes in the scholarship competition. To date, of six entries the young lady has secured four firsts, one third and one highly commended, and 1 has been in the fore in each effort.

At the Christchurch Competitions: on Wednesday the award in the National Song, mezzo. Open class. Twenty*, one entries was:—Miss Kita Morgan, (Hokitika), “Rory Darling,” and Miss; Mavis Greer (Ricearton), “Hush’d is; My Lute,” 89 points (equal) 1; Misst Annie Eneas (St, Albans), ’‘When Daisies Pled” 88 point s 3. Miss L... Boyd (Christchurch) and Mrs C. G.. Mallard (Sydenham) were highly commended. The judge said that Miss, Morgan’s interpretation was good and. that she sang with pathos. Miss. Greer’s interpretation was very goba and colourful. The section was not. a very inspired one, but there was some, very good singing on the part oi the recalled competitors. The winners; gave very good interpretations and the third performer effectively used contrast. He did not believe in making; too critical a differentiation where two competitors were so evenly matched* and had decided to give a tie for first place.
