YACHT SIGHTED

BANGI ON RETURN VOYAGE FROM SYDNEY. AUCKLAND, May 20. The Auckland yacht Bangi passed Cape Maria van Diemarn at two o’clock this afternoon on her honleward voyage from Sydney, after having com. peled in the recent race across the Tasman. Advice to this effect was re eeived from the liglitkeeper at Cape Maria, who stated that the Rangi had reported “all well.” Tilt* yacht left Sydney on May 2, where she bad been weatherbound for a week previously, so that she lias been eighteen days in making her landfall. On the race from Auckland to Sydney, Rangi was thirteen days in making her landfall. She had mis-, taken her course, however, and the coast of Australia was sighted at Green Cape, Sydney being three days’ sailing further north. On that trip Rangi had only two compasses—a binnacle compass, which was useless for navigation, and spirit compass, which, owing to the yacht’s hurried departure, had not

been “swung” for enabling the con? version ot true courses to compass courses. The error of the sextant was unknown a»d the chronometer would not go, so that tlig'tTratic course sailed by Bangi was ‘little to be wondered at. However, Those deficiencies will have been remedied in Sydney and the yacht must have met very adverse weather to protract her passage so much this time. Mr W. A. E. Leonard, owner of Rangi, has made arrangements with the Health Department for her urue granted pratique at Russell. This means that when she arrives at Auckland she will be able to come direct to a berth without waiting for medical inspection. The ene-w have a very good reason for wishing for a fast trip to Auckland. Mr Eric Spraggon, who sailed with them on the race and returnee to Auckland bv steamer, has fixed May 26 as the date for his marriage, and bis shipmates are keen to be at bis wedding.
