BRITISH CRUISERS
FOR SOUTH AMERICAN WATERS. 1 ('British Official Wireiess.) RUGBY, May 21. I'lie Admiralty announce that it ha.\ decided that two of the cruisers of American and West Indies Squadron shall form a South American Division to he under a Commodore of the Second Class. These vessels will cruise in Smith American waters, find will joint the main division of the squadron annually for exercises. It is intended that the new arrange* ment shall take effect when H.M.S. Durban arrives on the station to relieve H.M.S. Despatch, probably in September next and the Commodore of the second class shall fly his broad pennant in the Durban. Captain Lairiepool has been selected for the post. BRITISH NAVAL PROMOTION. LONDON. May 21. Replying in the House of Commons *to a question, lit. Hon Mr Alexander (first Lord/ olf the Admiralty 1, sni/d a new scheme of pro-motion had been approved by the Board of the Admiralty as the result of the report of a committee set up to enquire into tiie working of the Ist mate scheme. “It was proposed,” he said, “to drop the title of “Mate,” and to promote selected candidates from the lower deck to the rank of acting SubLieutenant.”
