The Collector of Customs, in a prosecution to-tla.v, said he would have pressed for a heavy penalty, but owing to tli,.. fact that defendant was suffering from an incurable disease, lie would be content to ask for deportation. The necessary order was made, a iid defendant is to leave on 12th of June.

WELLINGTON, May 21. A body found on the beach near Seatoun wharf this morning, has been identified as Airs Jewell, 56, of 21 Talavera Terrace, It was fully clothed and appeared to have been in thp water only a few hours. Deceased ""ns last seen between four and five p.m. yesterday at the place she stayed, Talavera Terrace, since when her movements are unknown.
HOTEL FIRE PARTICULARS
WELLINGTON, May 21. When the br’gade arrived there was no hope of saving the building, from every window and door of which flames were issuing. The fire engines and a. big ladder were rushed to the scene.
On arrival of the first engine the licensee's wife, All's Hycle, was seen on tin l parapet between the floors surrounded by flames and smoke. She did not respond to the crowd’s cries tu jump, but wisely waited for tile ladder. The task of getting her safely to the ground was attended by considerable risk to firemen, and the ladder was showing signs of catching fire by the time the rescue was effected.
Several occupants of the hotel are stated to have leaped to safety. It is believed that the fire started on the ground floor and had a strong hold before being discovered, cutting of.l escape hy the stairs-

TOMATO THROWING
SEQUEL IN COURT. CHRISTCHURCH, May 21. As a sequel to the tomato throwing episode in Alanehester Street on election night, Douglas William Hansen, aged 19, an unemployed, pleaded guilty to-day to disorderly behaviour and was fined £1 and costs.
