THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
LABOUR, AND LIBERTY. The Law Reform Bill which Is now before the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales includes one provision that demands, and doubtless will receive, very stringent criticism from all who attach importance to the inestimable privilege of personal and political freedom. The clause in question makes any “defamatory” statement in the Press or on the public platform a criminal offence. The epithet “def'amaljry” fa a singularly elastic one, and as Mr Bavin has already pointed out, it might easily be interpreted so as to render all criticism of political leaders or political measures impossible. The manifest purpose of such a measure is simply to gag alul stifle the opponents of the party in power, and it has not even the merit of novelty to commend it.
