ESCAPE OF OIL

MASTER OF TANKER FINED. WELLINGTON, May 15. The master of the tanker Athelqueen, from one of the scuppers of which a large quantity of crude oil escaped into the harbour on March 19th ; was fined £2O by Mr E. Page, S.M., in. a reserved judgment to-day. The Magistrate said he thought due care had not been taken, hut he did not think the case was one calling for a heavy penalty. The neglect was not gross and after the oil had escaped no pains were spared to remedy the damage and gather it in by the use of sawdust spilt on the oil.
