BIREBECK WINS STEEPLES

WANGANUI, May 16
The Wqnganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting concluded to-day in fine, sunny weather. 'The course was in splendid order, and the going was fast. The attendance improved. The totalisator handled - £13,551 t compared with £23,524 on the, second day last year, making the total, for the meeting £24,078, against £40,090 for" the 1930 winter meeting. None of the jockeys were badly injured in falls that occurred m the Steeplechase. After the last race an inquiry was held into the fall of Royal Songster, but it wa s considered accidental, no blame being attachable to anyone. Results:— May Hurdles : —(1) Zippor L; (2) Perle De Leon 2: (7) Garin thin 3. Won by a length. Time 2.58 2-5. Trial Hack:—(l) Banbridge I; (4) Royal Bengal 2; (2) Takahue 3. won by a head. Time 1.32 1-5. Gonville Hack:—Pewa 1; (1) Knollmere. 2; (2) Grand Jury 3. Won 4®y of a length. Time.. 1.50 3-5. Wanganui Steeplechase:—(l) Birkbeck I; (3) Umeo 2; (4) Nukum.n ,i. Won by 2 lengths. 'lime 5.0 2-5. Connolly-Handicap : —(2) Black Duke 1; (0) Cashier 2; (5) Malayan 3. Won by ;[ of a length. 'Time 2.7 1-5. Puma Hack:—(7) Pukitero 1; (9) Chief Savage 2; (0) Night Speaker 3. Won hv a head.
Farewell Handicap:- (3) Richfield 1 ; (4) Chief "Link 2; (5) Ridgmount 3. Won by 2 lengths. Time 1.13 4-5.

SYDNEY, .May 17. Tnttersals Club held their meeting at Raudwiok yesterday in fine weather. The Tattersals Stakes resulted: Stately 8.0 (Pratt) 1; SareTitrm 9.2 (Davidson) 2; Lady Doris 7.9 (Rose) 3. 1.5 started. In a great finish, the former New Zen hinder, Stately, won by a long neck, with 1 lengths l>otween second and third. 'Time 2.0. "MELBOURNE, May 17. At yesterday’s races at Moonee Valley, the* Bnnya Hurdles was won by the former New Zealander Catkin 10.5 (Wise) ; with Afcadius 10.3 (Winks) second; and Kendler 10.10 (f.nkson) third. Twelve started. Won by a neck; third two lengths away. Time 3.47. KENTUCKY DERBY. NEW YORK, May 10. At Louisville, the Kentucky Derby wa« won by the. threo-year-old colt Twenty Grand, belonging to Mrs Whitney. The colt established a new record for the track, doing the mile ami a-quarter in 2.1 4-5. The prize is 50:000 dollars This is America’s premier race.
