UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
EXAGGERATED RUMOURS. WELLINGTON, May 13. The Hon. S. G. Smith (Chairman of the Unemployment Board) to-day made the following statement : “My attention has been drawn to the rumours which are drifting through the Dominion as to the non-payment of the levy, and that statements have been made in some places that ‘thousands have not paid the unemployment levy.’ Owing to prosecutions lor non-payment not having so far been instituted, it may he that some individuals will be deceived into thinking that they can easily evade their •nesponsibfiliticj'i in tins respect. Investigations, however, into numerous lists reported of persons not having paid their levy an,] in some instances of persons declaring that they were not going to pay showed that 'in the great majority of cases the levy had actually beer paid, and it is evident that the rumours of the ‘thousands’ not having paid the. levy are grossly exaggerated.
“The machinery and method for dealing with such In me numbers of registrations necessarily occupies time before it can be got into working order so that all evasions can he detected and action for dealing" with them automatically follow. The cooperation of all tlie officials concerned bag taken some time to arrange, because of the necessity for the greatest care being exercised before proceeding to recover penalties under the Act. The system inaugurated, however, is now functioning satisfactorily, and the stage is just about readied when proceedings will be taken against all these who have neglected to pay the unemployment levy. Already large lists of such persons have been given to the responsible officers who are to initiate action, and it is expected that presently informations will be laid all over the Dominion against such defaulters. “1 do desire to point out to those who are neglecting to fulfil tluvr obligations in respect to the payment of the levy that the Unemployment Act imposes, on conviction, without anv discretion on the part of the Magistrate, a penalty of £5 in ad-
dition to a penalty of 6d for each month or part of a month for which tne levy is in arrears.”
