CRICKET

NEW ZEALAND TOUR. AGAINST HAMPSHIRE. (Special to Press Association). (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, May 14. At Southampton, Hampshire continued their innings against New Zealand in fine weather and on an easy wicket. The attendance was moderate on both days. Matheson bowled at considerable pace dismissing Judd with a beautiful ball. The New Zealand fielding was very keen. A GOOD PERFORMANCE. LONDON, May 14. The New Zealand cricketers are in a good position, in the match against Hampshire. The county side was dismissed in the first innings for 190. Harfield and Judd went in quick succession. A valuable partnership between Mead and Kennedy added sixty before Kennedy was bowled by Matheson. Lowndes and Creese were disposed of cheaply. Mead hitting with unusual freedom attempted to reach his century by means of an impossible third run, with the result that Boyes was run out. Bartley ran on his first stroke and was sent back to the pavilion. through the agency of a fine return by Kerr. Mead was bowled by Matheson in the next over, still; requiring .a/ single for the hundred, which would have enabled him to equal Grace’s one hundred and twenty-six centuries. .

Hampshire’s innings concluded when Baring was caught in the slips, leaving New Zealand eighty-one ahead on the first strike.

Matheson bowled excellently, swinging late occasionally. He sent down twenty-six overs. Merritt was frequently dangerous. New Zealand made a good start in the second innings. Mills and Blunt were both caught off snicks, by the wicketkeeper. Dempster was again brilliant, employing a variety of shots and was undefeated at eighty-six, when stumps were drawn for thq day.
