SERIOUS FIRE
AT FELLMONCERY WORKS, (]jy Telegraph—Per Press Association) TIMARU, May 12. What this morning was the i'elltiitsnger.s department o,t Southfield Freezing Works is now a mass ol smouldering ruins, ns the result of one of the most destructive fires thnt have occurred in Timaru for some considerable time causing damage ol C2O, 000.
Two minutes before 10 o’clock Mr T). Voyce employed in the fellmongerv department noticed smoke issuing from a huge wool drying machine and immediately gave the alarm, but before the hose could he brought into operation, the dryer burst into flames and within five minutes the whole of the fellmongerv department was a blazing inferno.
The fire fighting equipment at the works was soon brought into commission. but it proved totally inadequate to the task. Timaru Fire Brigade with two engines arrived 10 minutes alter tno alarm and the Superintendent and men began to fight from three sides and succeeded in preventing the flame s from spreading to the freezing chambers which contained hundreds of earcases of frozen meat, and the two tallow departments.
