Tho compulsory insurance of motorists as at present framed was discussed by the Dominion Executive or the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Wellington on Wednesday evening, when the suggestion was made that the cover was not comprehensive enough to warrant a premium ol El. The little vessel which arrived at Bluff from the South Cape Islands last- week brought 40,000 new season’s mutton birds. The weather, while the vessel was at the Islands, is described as being the worst experienced for years and considerable difficulty was met with in shipping the consignment at the variou s landings. The birds are reported as; being plentiful and in the host of condition. The health of all on the Islands called at was good, and it was anticipated that the season would conclude about 25th. May.

At the .Magistrate's Court at (iro.vinoutli yesterday, two charges were laid against John Bullock: (1) That, on April 10, at North Beach, he assaulted Robert Thomas Roper, ranger for the Cobden Town Hoard; (’2) that he rescued a horse, seized for the purpose of being impounded. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and was represented by Mr W. J. Joyce. After hearing eve denee Mr Meld rum S.M. said that there was a direct eonliict of evidence. Roper said that he was struck by defendant, and the latter said that Roper was pulled into the gorse by the horse when it broke away. Defendant admitted that- he jumped out of the car. and frightened the horse. It appeared to Tie clear that defendant attempted to rescue the horse, using a little force in the matter. The horse wa s not handed over hv Roper on his own accord. The assault was not very serious, kut it was Interference wit’h the ranger when he was carrying out his duty. Defendant would be fined 10s on the assault charge, and fined 10s on the second charge, with 16s Court costs and 10s 6d witnesses’ expenses.

On the retirement of Air C. Coxall, from the captaincy of the Reefton Volunteer Fire Brigade, he was met by the members of the brigade and presented with the past president’s badge of the West Coast Fire Brigades’ Association. In making the presentation Afr J. B. Auld spoke in eulogistic terms of the services of Mr Coxall to the brigade and to the town of Reefton, and wished him success and prosperity in the future.
