The development of the/dowtemperature carbonisation of coal and other processes for its scientific treatment. are under consideration by the \ Government, said Hr E. Shinwell, Alinister of Mines, in reply to a question in the' House of v. Commons. He was consulting the Department of Scientific Reasearcn on the best way in which the Government could assist.
Substantial progress had been made in the last four years, he said, and certain processes were being operated on a commercial scale. Effective help would be given by the Government, first in experiments for the’purpose of improving by refining the value of tar oil pro. dueed from low temperature carbonisation and, secondly, by inducing a wider use in the Government service of smokeless fuel. He was considering what could be done to increase the use of pulverised fuel, especially for marine purposes.
Important research has been carried out at the fuel .research station, continued Mr Shinwell, and this would continue.
