A peculiar elongated fish was caught on Aloud* l y at Fairdown by Messrs Hill and Carr. Its length was about--16 fact an ( | had obviously been bitten by .‘mother fish, probably a shark, as about two feet of its length had been severed from the rest of the body, ft was later identified as an Om-fish of the ribbon variety.

At an informal meeting of the Committee of the AVesfland Racing Club last evening, the question of a racing date was further considered. There was no i-erffv to hand as to a suitable date at Riccarton, and it was decided to communicate further with Greymouth on the matter, in regard to which a proposal had been made by tfie New Zealand Racing Conference authorities. If considered advisable a deputation will visit Grey mouth tomorrow to discuss the matter and consider definite action in regard to a Coast meeting about June 3rd.
The Competitions which open tonight at the Princess Theatre will bo continued all day to-morrow at the All Saints’ Hall, while the same Hall will be occupied also on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday with the sessions each day. On Friday, Saturday and Monday mornings only, I’m. cess Theatre will lie occupied also w*th special sessions for the dancing section, for which there is a- very large entry. Both demonstration concerts on Wednesday and Thursday of next week will he held in the Princess Theatre. Full particulars of the sessions and entries appear in the iooklet programme now on sale, price one shilling. As the festival is an extensive one, the booklet will prove indispensible for patrons. Le.s Grnmmitt and his dance band are returning on 'Wednesday, June 10th. and will give a long night dance at the Soldiers’ Hall. Suppei will be available and special musical novelties will lie featured. The band will be at Ilarihari on Monday, June Sth.
There was a good crowd at AH Saints’ Hall last evening for the ijanco, the music for which was supplied by Los Grnmmitt and Ids danc© band. The music was of first class order, all the latest musical numbers being featured. The dinners were well satisfied with the programme and the announcement of the return of the orchestra in about a month’s time will be bailed with delight.
The death took place at Athol, Central Otago on Tuesday of Mrs Harcourt relict of the late Richard Allan liarcourt. Thq deceased was a daughter of the late Mr Augustus Boys, of Blue Spur, where she resided for many
years and later resided in Hampden Street, Hokitika, later removing .to Central Otago. Her husband died some toll years ago. Deceased was (111 years of ago ,n»d leaves a family of tvvp daughters (Lucy and Margaret, one being worried) and three sim* (Richard, Charles and William) who are in Otago. The funeral is taking place to Hokitika cemetery to-morrow afternoon, the remains arriving by tonight’s train.
• The Public Works Committee of the Hokitika Borough Council made a tour of inspection yesterday of various works in hand and contemplated. Very useful work is being done in connection with both the east boundary and north boundary drains for which unemployed labour has been utilised. The connection of Jollie St. between Hampden and Stafford streets is being completed also and will provide a useful thoroughfare. Various drainage and other works were also inspected, and several matters suggested for attention as labour becomes available. If all the matters proposed are attended to, a large amount of ynrv useful Borough work will lie accomplished, as many improvements about the streets and footpaths are contemplated.
Apropros the tributes paip t 0 dogs, a Papanui resident tells a story of canine affection and faithfulness which lie witnessed recently. One Sunday evening while on his way to visit a friend, he saw a dead fox terrier in the cutter. A large Airedale w«s standing over it whimpering, and by its behaviour the observer concluded that the two dogs had been friends. He came home that night on the opposite side of the street and forgot all about the incident until the following morning, when, (passing that way again, he' noticed the Airedale still keeping watch by the body, its bead between its paws and it(s nose touching the tip of the fox terrier's nose. Another man who also witnessed the incident was so touched that he paid a shilling to a butcher to have some meat taken to the dog. The offering: however, was refused by the faithful wateller, and even after a Council employee had placed the body under a hedge, the Airedale remain,u] . constantly on guard,
