Westland Acclimatisation and Tourist Society
WEDNESDAY, MAY 6. The monthly meeting of the Society was held at the County Chambers at 7.20 o’clock. Present: Mr J. King (voted to the chair), A. C. Armstrong, S. Godfrey, R. Paterson, A. N. Baker, W. Braddon, Garnet Perry, E>. J. Lloyd and D. J. Evans. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Department of Internal Affairs stating the opossum season would extend from noon on Ist June to noon on Ist. Angjusu.—Received. It was stated the three Coastal districts ftad the, same season.
From same acknowledging copy of the annual report and balance sheet.— Received. From same thanking the Society for report received on bird life in the district. Received. The report indicated an increase in bird life of tbe district. From same asking for full particulars of doer culling operations in South Westland.—Received, to. be supplied on receipt of particulars ’ from Ranger Hodgkinson. From same expressing thanks for re. port regarding the deer stalking success of Sir Douglas Ball’s visit to South Westland. Received. It. was stated Sir Douglas Hall would return 1 ' next season: also Lord Boiler was likely to make a return visit. From same notifying that payments on account of the Hawkes Bay Earthquake by the Societv had been validated by act of Parliament.—Received with thanks.
From J. O’Brjen M.P.. reporting it was not possible to alter the proposal in the Finance Act to appropriate royalties for Acclimatisation work to the Government.—Received. Regret was expressed that last yar’s accrued revenue was not available, and on the strength of the receipts certain committments had been entered into. With the loss of revenue certain activities of. the Societv would have to he curtailed. Mr O’Brien’s letter was received will thanks. From Postmaster, Hokitika., notifying tile issue of ten shooting I ; censes to 30th. April.-—Received.
From North. 'Canterbury Society offering ova at 4s per 1,000. Received and filed for reference.
From C. Hodgkinson reporting success of Sir Douglas Hall’s stalking tour,' a magnificent 15 pointer and three good Royals being secured, and stating .Sir Douglas would return next season.—Received, satisfaction being expressed at the good season experienced: Other administrative correspondence was read, and dealt with, the Secretary to take action in accordance with the direction of the meeting. GENERAL.
Accounts to the amount, of £34 2s 8d were passed for payment. Mr Armstrong on behalf of the Hatchery Committee reported tbe completion of the repairs and improvements, including a new flume across the Kanieri river. He also reported the result of a telephone conversation with the President of the Grey Society ( who purposed visiting the Hatchery shortly.
Air Baker suggested the cleaning up r’f the grounds at the Hatchery, and the Caretaker is to be asked to give tbe matter attention as time permits. ft was resolved to write the inspector of Fisheries in respect to the reported appearance of large quinnat salmon at the rriouth of the Waitaha river; and to enquire again as to additional ova available,' for this season. Tbe matter of procuring rainbow .ova for portions of tb e district was fuvouied by the Grey Society, and simpar action was suggested here. Tbe meeting"concluded at 8.10 p.m.
