NEW ZEALAND SQUADRON. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, Alay 4. The warships Diomede and Laburnum left Wellington to-day after a period m port, during which musket),v exercises were carried out at Jrontham by the crews. Diomede is calling a,t Napier .en route to Auckland and Laburnum is going direct to Auckland. Wakakura is sailing for Auckland via Marlborough Sounds, where the annual sea training of the Wellington Division of the Naval Volunteer Reserve is being carried out. Veronica remains in Wellington for a- time.
PRISONERS ESCAPE. AUCKLAND. May -5. Handcuffed together, two prisoners made a sensational escape from Hie Supremo Court this morning, after being sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment by Judge Smith, hut they were caught near Parnell shortly afterwards. Tliev were Kenneth John Evans, 21, and Thomas Douglas Forsyth. 2b. This made Forsyths’ third escape from custody, he having previously broken away from the Hautu prison camp and AH.. Eden gaol, .whence Evans escaped with Forsyth.
SHIPPING DISPUTE. WELLINGTON. ALiy 5. The departure of the ATonowai lev Svdnoy was postponed till 8 p.m.. t,v----,1-iv owing to a dispute over manning. Negotiations are proceeding.
