. EXCELSIORS V. RIVALS. The'first game for the senior championship was played on Cass Square on Saturday. The conditions were ideal. There was a fair attendance of spectators. The game was played in a veryfriendly spirit and was clean right through. For a first match the display was fairly good and some good exhibitions. should be given by both team 1 * later. The following were the teams;
Rivals Carter, Chalmers, Stopforth, Fitzgibbons. Mclntosh, Webster, Rim mer, Houston, Pierson, Schist. Smytln* Riohards, West, Pfahlert and Earcorn he.
Excelsiors: —Rutland, Schroder. Martyn, Hall, R. King,' W. Hughes. Koch, Hagnr, Eager, Palmer, Kelly, E. Hughes, Wright, Lawton and Stevenson. Tlie‘ game was started by Hughes for Excelsior kicking off and play remained in the centre for a while. 1/ Hughes then took play to Rivals 25 by a, good dash. From the next vnsh by Excelsiors, Stevenson scored and Martyn converted—s to nil. W. Hughes returned the kick off to hal ’-way and the reds kept up the pres, sure. In defending hard the Rival 1 ) were penalised and Mar tyn had a shot at goal, but it was touched by a Rival player. Excelsiors were now playing fairly well and had the Rivals busy defending. Offside, however, relieved the pressure, W. Hughes was next noticed for, good play by stopping p. Rival rush and with n good kick fpitnd the lino, The Rivals, head, ed by Houston, shifted piny 1 ! to reds' 25 and a, free kick was taken-by pi'ab. lert, but It fell short and play remained in the reds' 25. Another free kick to Rivpls was taken by Webster and be was successful with a nice kick. s'to 9.

The Reds, who w-'w ben vie- : n *lm : forwards, continued to Dress. Houston I with a. nice kick sent them hack, but the Reds, were not to he kent put. Carter next stopped ft red rush by a good mark and found the ' line'.. While staying the red , rushes, the Rivals Were greatly handicapped by 1 losing two of their players, West and I Mclntosh, who had to retire through injuries.
j Koch put in a nice dribbling rush, which was stopped near the line. For an infringement, Martvn again kicked a nice goal for Excelsiors, whose score now read—l 7 to 0.
The play now became scrappy and J want of form was apparent. The Rivals were feeling the loss of their players and were busy defending. Houston was playing a great defensive game for Rivals and stopped the reds repeatedly. In a desperate effort the Rivals put in j a good dash, but a force down was | the result. From a scrum in Rivals ’25, 1 Koch got the ball and passed to TV. Hughes, who put in a nice dodgy run j and then passed to Martvn, who ran -round behind the posts. He converted 1 and the final score was— Excel lsiors 22 Rivals 6 Mr McKay, a member of the Christchurch Referees’ Association, controlled the game.
COBDEN V. UNITED. At Cobden on Saturday, Cobden defeated ITnited by 10 to 8. The scores were ■ made up of two tries for United scored early in the first spell, one by Gilbert which Bell converted and one by Baldwin; the score at half time being Bto oin United favour. In the second half T'aafe scored for Cobden, A. King converting. Near the end of the game Birchfield scored and J. King converted. BLAKETOWN V. STARS. The Blaketown team defeated Stars by 9 points to- nil. . "MeEnaney and Oaulton scored tries, Pascoe kicking a penalty goal. The Blaketown backs were far superior to their opponents, the two packs being fairly equal. RIMU V. KIWIS. The above game was played on Saturda3' at Rimu and resulted in a win for Rimu by 10 to nil. The game was very willing and was witnessed by a fair crowd. Up till half time neither team had scored and it was only at the end of the second spell that any tries were scored. Of the two tries by Rimu. Brown secured one, both, tries being converted.
