Aeroplancs flew over the city indicating that the Bishop of Funchal s peace efforts had failed. REBELS CLAIM SUCCESSES. LONDON. May 2. A Funchal message, timed at 3.10 this afternoon, states: The rebel loaders claim to have repulsed bombardments and attacks in four places. Transports are unable to approach the island, owing to artillery fire from the shore. Some of the Government forces have been wounded, and a destroyer has been towed to the base. REVOLT ENDS. GOVERNMENT TAXES FUNCHAL. MADEIRA, May 2. The revolt has ended. Tbe Ministery announces that Funchal was handed over to the Government to-day. A later message states that the rebel leaders took refuge in the British Consulate. The warship Vasco De Gama’s bombardment. though it broke the rebel moral, caused no casualties. Marines and bluejackets were landed to protect British lives and property. Foreign residents and visitors were not harmed. The civilians were not injured.
