S.S. PROGRESS WRECKED

PLIGHT Off PROGRESS. ROUGH WEATHER PREVENTS. WELLINGTON, May I. The steamer Progress did not get towed into port last night. The Harbour Board tag returned to port at 8 a.m. after being unable to connect with the vessel, owing to the heavy weather. The tug set out again at nine fifteen. The Union Com. pun.v’a Toruwhiti went, out at fi.43 a.m. and returned at 9.-IT. At eleven tills morning the Progress Was lying about half a mile off t’lio beach, to tile eastward of Island Bay. Slio is reported to have two anchors down which are holding fast, but an exceptionally heavy set is running. The Progress broke her tail shaft about eight last night and the Aralmra on route to Nelson, stood by for a while, Tho Tel’Owlnti only Wnlil as far e<s the Hoads. There s|ie received a report from the To in that the weather was very rough; too bad, the Tolu's master considered, to do anything. Communication was made with Island Bay to see if a line could be taken out to the Progress hv of a laimdi. but Island Bay reported it was low water and the sea was running heavily cross tli<> entrance to the Bay. It- is stated that the T’oia got a line aboard last night, but was unable to get a hawser aboard.' FURTHER PARTICULARS. WELLINGTON, May 1. The Progress broke her tail shaft approaching Wellington Heads last evening. She declined assistance from the Opawa as the weather was good at the time, only asking to be reportoci to Wellington Harbour Board. The weather changed and J t was impossible for tugs to get her in tow, and she drifted into the coast, off Island Bay and there for a long tillffi wn b held by anchors, but now these have broken away and she is now on the rocks as wired. THREIv MEN DEAD. TWO OTHERS OUT ON ROCKS. WELLINGTON, May 1. Happy Valley tearooms reports threo men are dead so far and either lour or live saved, they are not sure which. The men who have come ashore are severely battered. Two men can be fecon out on the rocks but cannot be reached. The ship is completely broken up, and there is wreckage from one end of the beach to the other. There is a big crowd out at the shore. The Progress struck at noon.
