THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.

MONEY FROM TRADE. At this stage of our civilisation it is entirely preposterous to suppose that a country’s real economic strength depends on a serried mass of yellow ingots. We need a certain amount to keep the exchanges within gold points. But if we got our cost, of production down and could sell our goods more freely abroad, we should do so much more effectively. A more general recognition of these platitudes, and a more detached outlook concerning the question of gold stocks, would make th e prospect of sustained cheapness of money still more assured.
